CHARLOTTE, N.C. (CBS Charlotte) -- Christians all across the country will head to church this Wednesday, in observance of Ash Wednesday.

Ash Wednesday is recognized by Christians as the first day of Lent. During Ash Wednesday, Christians approach the altar while a Pastor applies ashes to their foreheads -- A symbol of inner repentance.

Once they have received their ashes, they will spend 40 days celebrating the season of Lent.
